Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas and Samaná: Every Way to Get There

The run from Santo Domingo to the Samaná Peninsula is one of the easiest airport-to-paradise transfers in the Caribbean: a single modern toll highway crosses the island’s green interior and delivers you to the bay in about two hours. Whether you land at Las Américas (SDQ) international airport or start in the capital itself, here is every option for reaching Las Terrenas and Samaná town — with realistic times, costs and the local tricks that make each one smoother.

Key facts

  • Distance: ±135–155 km depending on destination and route
  • Driving time: ±2h15 to Samaná town, ±2h30 to Las Terrenas
  • Main road: Autopista del Nordeste (DR-7) toll highway — excellent surface
  • Tolls: ±US$10–15 total, cash in Dominican pesos
  • Bus fare: under US$15; private transfer ±US$150–220 per vehicle
  • Flight option: ±30 minutes to El Portillo airstrip outside Las Terrenas

Option 1: Rental car — most flexible

Pick up at SDQ or in the city and head east, joining the Autopista del Nordeste (DR-7) from the Las Américas highway. The road is modern, fast and scenic — rolling cattle country, palm valleys and barely any traffic between toll plazas. Keep pesos handy for the toll booths; cards are not reliably accepted.

For Las Terrenas, exit at the clearly marked junction near the end of the highway before Sánchez, then climb the well-paved mountain road into town — the bay views on the descent are your welcome gift. For Samaná town, continue to the highway’s end and follow the coast east. Having a car on the peninsula pays for itself: beaches like Playa Rincón, the El Limón ranches and Las Galeras are spread out, and our activity guide reads much better with wheels.

Option 2: Bus — cheapest

Two practical routes serve the peninsula from the capital:

  • Direct to Las Terrenas: scheduled coaches run several departures a day from Santo Domingo straight into Las Terrenas via the toll road — roughly 2.5 hours.
  • To Samaná town: Caribe Tours and other operators run frequent comfortable coaches; from Samaná, continue to Las Terrenas by taxi (±45 minutes) or local guagua via Sánchez.

Fares are a fraction of any other option — typically under US$15. Coaches are air-conditioned (bring a layer; Dominican bus a/c is a lifestyle statement). For how guaguas and motoconchos handle the last kilometers, see our guide to Dominican public transport.

Option 3: Private transfer — easiest

Pre-booked drivers meet you at SDQ arrivals with an air-conditioned van and handle everything door to door in about 2h15. Expect roughly US$150–220 per vehicle depending on group size and hour. After a long-haul flight, or landing after dark with family and luggage, this is the option that keeps everyone friends. Hotels and local agencies in Las Terrenas arrange reliable drivers — ask when you book your room.

Option 4: Domestic flight — fastest

Small aircraft connect Santo Domingo — mainly La Isabela (JBQ), the capital’s domestic airfield — with the El Portillo airstrip minutes outside Las Terrenas, in about 30 minutes of flying. Charters also serve Samaná’s El Catey (AZS) international airport. Worth real consideration for short trips or groups of four splitting the fare; full details in our guide to flying to Las Terrenas.

Don’t forget the e-ticket

Everyone entering or leaving the Dominican Republic must complete the free migration e-ticket on the official government portal. Do it before you land — our step-by-step e-ticket guide in English walks you through the form in five minutes.

Arriving: the mountain road into town

Whichever ground option you choose, the final act is the same and worth staying awake for: the road climbs out of Sánchez through rainforest, crests the ridge, and suddenly the whole northern coastline unrolls below — palm canopy to the horizon, surf lines feathering the reef, Las Terrenas tucked into its bay. Drivers: there are two or three safe pull-offs near the top for the photo. It is the single best introduction to the peninsula, and it never quite stops working even after years of living here.

Which option should you pick?

  • First visit, traveling light: direct coach to Las Terrenas.
  • Family or group with luggage: private transfer.
  • Planning to explore the peninsula: rental car, no contest.
  • Short stay, allergic to driving: domestic flight to El Portillo.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Santo Domingo airport to Las Terrenas?

About 2.5 hours via the DR-7 toll road in normal conditions, including the mountain stretch into town. Add a buffer for capital traffic if you’re starting downtown at rush hour.

Is the road safe to drive at night?

The toll highway itself is good and lit at plazas, but the final mountain road and town approaches are dark and shared with motorbikes. If you land late, a transfer is the more relaxed choice; do the drive in daylight next time.

Can I take a taxi from the airport instead of booking a transfer?

Yes — airport taxis quote similar or slightly higher rates than pre-booked transfers, without the vetting. For the same money, a booked driver who knows the Las Terrenas road is the better purchase.

Is there a direct bus from SDQ airport?

Not from the terminal itself; coach departures leave from terminals in the city. Factor a short taxi hop into the bus plan, which still lands far under any other option’s cost.

Should I rent the car at the airport or in Las Terrenas?

If you want wheels for the whole stay, the airport — international agencies, better rates, and the drive in is easy. If you only need a car for two or three excursion days, arrive by transfer and rent locally in Las Terrenas; several agencies in town deliver to your hotel.

However you arrive, the moment the bay appears between the hills you’ll understand why so many first trips here quietly turn into property searches. When that happens, our Las Terrenas listings and local team are at your service.
